Course description

This master's course provides you with an in-depth understanding of the key factors that govern the design and selection of materials for use in advanced engineering applications, as well as their processing, properties and stability.

Focusing on composites, advanced alloys and engineering ceramics, you will explore the technologies used in the manufacturing and processing of advanced materials and develop an understanding of the relationships between composition, microstructure, processing and performance.

You will learn how to assess materials performance in service and develop an understanding of the processes of degradation in hostile conditions. You will also be trained in the essential skills needed to design and develop the next generation of high performance engineering materials, establishing a strong foundation for a future career in industry or research.

This course aimed at students who have a strong materials background wish to gain more specialised knowledge of the principles, structure, processing and design of advanced engineering materials. However, it is suitable also for graduates from other engineering and science backgrounds who wish to specialise in materials engineering.

Aims

On successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials, students will have:

  • Acquired a detailed knowledge of state-of-the-art materials systems
  • Know out how 21 st century materials perform and survive in hostile conditions
  • Understand how their structure is engineered from the nanoscale upwards
  • Discover the technologies used in their manufacture and processing
  • Acquired skills in materials selection and engineering design
  • Acquired research skills in advanced testing and characterisation, data analysis and scientific reporting.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered through a mix of lecturing, blended small and small group tutorials with hands on research training.

We use a range of teaching and learning methods, including tutorials, workshops, seminars and research projects. These are supported by an e-learning infrastructure that includes on-line feedback, lecture and lab podcasting and close academic supervision.

Career opportunities

Our graduates have gone on to fill key posts as materials scientists, engineers, managers and consultants in academia, industry and research and development.

An Advanced Engineering Materials MSc also provides a solid base for further study and some graduates progress on to complete a PhD.

Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) with the award of Further Learning.
