Manchester Metropolitan University

Night life in Manchester is great Good public transport links Knowledgeable and approachable lecturers Modern and up-to-date buildings Impressive sustainability credentials Extensive physical library and online database access Wide range of study spaces

At first, I was incredibly nervous about studying at university: I came from a small town in the countryside and moving to the city was a big shock to my system. I started out being incredibly shy and reserved, never having lived away from home before. However, after a semester and a half here, I can see a real positive change to my confidence: the university's facilities are impeccable, with constant support from tutors and lecturers, so you don't ever need to worry about anything as there's always someone close by to help. I've made tonnes of friends via the Union (I really recommend the TableTop RolePlayingGame - TTRPG club!) Overall, I would really recommend this university to anyone, as even in the midst of a cost of living crisis, university life is not as intimidating or frightening at Manchester Metropolitan University. The only improvements I could ask for is some more accommodation, as student houses in Manchester right now are either too far away or too expensive, but that really is my only qualm.

the best experience is the freedom to do what you want when you want with who you want. the worst experience is first year halls when you're living with 9 others....

I reckon the bathroom in my halls is the worst thing to happen to me since I've been here. That should say it all really :)

Looking back, and through my experiences with visiting friends at 'prestigious' or supposedly better unis, MMU proved to me to be everything I could have asked for in a uni, and this is greatly underecognised by snobby league tables and those who only have time for the Russell Group club. However, please bare in mind that I am only speaking from my experience in the area of humanities, and more specifically, the English and Philosophy departments in the city of Manchester (I can't speak for Crewe, Cheshire!). Nevertheless, in all honesty, MMU has unrivalled resources in the form of an extensive, thoroughly organised, efficient and spacious main library (far better than the University of Manchester -no joke!), computers in abundance (never short of far from one) and internet moodle systems and email/correspondence with tutors is very efficient. The careers department is extremely organised and caring and have everything you could want. the campuses are fairly near one another, tidy and easy to navigate. The people in Manchester are some of the most friendly in the world and MMU students are equally friendly, but also a lot of fun. The range of courses and subjects on offer is incomparable with anywhere. It is probably one of the largest in the UK, with the greatest range. This is what causes the downfall in the league tables I feel, as not every department can be perfect. Nevertheless, the international status of the university has grown dramatically since I started in 2010, and it hosts a wide mix of students from home and abroad, also offering many opportunities to spend part of your studies abroad. The academic staff are fantastic. In English
