Become a qualified midwife with us

A shortage of qualified midwives means now's the perfect time to switch to this rewarding healthcare field. This course has been especially designed for registered adult nurses and has been developed in partnership with local NHS trusts. Studying midwifery at university will give you an equal mix of theory and practice, preparing you for a new career in just 85 weeks. You'll spend half your time with us learning theory to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency. This will cover anatomy, physiology/pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues. The other half will focus on clinical practice. You’ll be required to work shifts, experiencing 24-hour, seven-day care to develop your understanding of the needs and experiences of women and babies. You’ll have your own patients and get support from a mentor. To promote efficiency and continuity, you’ll follow a reduced caseload.

How you’ll practice your skills

Clinical practice will be a vital part of your studies. Your placement will take place at one of our partner hospitals: Whittington Hospital, North Middlesex Hospital, Royal Free London NHS Foundation. Many of our students get their first job after graduation in the same location as their placement. Your studies will be supported by our brand new facilities, including midwifery skills labs. Additionally, there’s a separate building where you’ll practise with a range of high-quality simulations such as resuscitation as well as dealing with women who require complex care. Our course is approved by the NMC and you’ll be placed on the professional midwifery register once you graduate. Your career opportunities after the completion of this course can go beyond hospitals. Your skills will be highly sought after by local clinics, GP surgeries, children’s centres, and private practices.

Get the support you need

We ensure every student has adequate support throughout their time with us. That’s why you’ll get matched with a Personal Tutor as well as a Student Learning Assistant and a Graduate Academic Assistant. They’ll have experience in your subject area and will be able to help whenever you need.

Accreditation

Our degree is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Midwifery with Professional Registration (Shortened Programme for Registered Adult Nurses)
Middlesex University is considered a great place to study because it offers modern facilities, strong academic support, and a diverse student community. The university provides well-equipped libraries, laboratories, and creative learning spaces that help students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Its location in London also gives students access to many career opportunities, internships, and cultural experiences, which can enhance their learning beyond the classroom. In addition, the university supports students through academic guidance, career services, and wellbeing support, helping them succeed during their studies. However, it could be improved by continuing to invest in campus facilities, expanding accommodation options, and increasing opportunities for work placements and industry connections so that students are even better prepared for future careers.

The university doesn’t just feel like a place to study it feels like a community. I feel comfortable, valued, and connected, which has made my journey both enjoyable and meaningful. The support from lecturers, staff, and services has been outstanding. Whether it’s academic guidance, wellbeing support, or simple encouragement, I always feel like help is available when I need it. The teaching is engaging, the resources are accessible, and the atmosphere encourages growth. I’ve gained confidence, skills, and knowledge that will stay with me long after Being surrounded by people from different backgrounds has enriched my experience and made the university feel even more like home.

Best: Meeting new people and gaining independence—it really helped me grow. Worst: Lack of work–life balance, especially during busy weeks when uni took over everything.

Midwifery with Professional Registration (Shortened Programme for Registered Adult Nurses)
As a student at Middlesex University, my overall university experience has been largely positive, with several strengths that make it a great place to study. One of the best aspects of Middlesex University is the supportive and approachable nature of the academic staff. Lecturers are knowledgeable in their subject areas and are always willing to provide guidance, feedback, and reassurance when needed. This support helps students feel more confident in their learning and encourages academic growth. Additionally, seminars and workshops are interactive, allowing students to engage in discussions, ask questions, and develop critical thinking skills. As a student nurse, another strong point of studying at Middlesex University is the quality of the facilities available on campus. The Hendon campus offers modern lecture theatres, well-equipped libraries, and quiet study spaces that support both individual and group learning. Online learning platforms such as My Learning and UniHub also make it easier for students to access course materials, submit assignments, and communicate with lecturers. Furthermore, the university’s diverse student population creates an inclusive and welcoming environment, where students can share different perspectives and experiences, enhancing both academic and personal development. So far there's nothing to improve but, the overall student experience, Middlesex University could focus on clearer and more consistent communication, as well as strengthening academic and mental health support during demanding periods. Offering more structured guidance for placements and assessments would also help students feel better prepared and supported throughout their studies. However, Middlesex University is a supportive and inclusive institution that offers good teaching, facilities, and opportunities for personal growth. With improved communication and enhanced student support, it has the potential to provide an even more rewarding and stress-free university experience.

I feel that the university has strong points in some areas and are lacking a lot in other areas. the university as a whole is brilliant and very easy to get around it. good in terms of location because it is fairly easy to get there. However there is still room for improvement.
