The Microbiology programme provides a comprehensive overview of modern research into bacteria, viruses and parasites. It covers both infectious disease and the wider context in which microorganisms exist. Topics include clinical and veterinary pathogens, how infectious diseases can be controlled by the immune system and by pharmaceutical interventions, molecular and cellular principles of microbiology, and environmental and industrial microbiology. You will have the opportunity to include a specialisation in Bacteriology, Parasitology or Virology. In the final year students can choose from a range of specialised advanced courses and undertake a research project under supervision from within the University or an external institution. These projects include working in a research laboratory, undertaking public engagement or researching a dissertation topic. You'll receive practical training in aspects of epidemiology at the Marine Biology Station at Millport in the Firth of Clyde. Microbiology can be taken as an MSci, which includes an additional placement year between year 3 and the final year of the degree. This is normally spent doing research in industry or a research institute, in the UK or overseas, and often attracts a modest salary. Our graduates are employed in many different industries including diagnostic and research laboratories for public health and in hospitals, and in companies in areas including food, brewing, petroleum, water and aquaculture. Others choose to progress to postgraduate study and/or follow research careers in academia or pharmaceutical industries. Some go on to do medicine or teaching. Our graduates are equipped with a flexible, broad-based training that takes them in many directions. The final-year options provide ample opportunity for specialisation towards your chosen career.
