Overview
The FdA Mental Health and Well-Being awards seek to provide students with the opportunity to develop the theoretical knowledge, application and skills required to work effectively with individuals with mental health conditions and disorders, either within the NHS, private, voluntary or independent sectors, and/or within roles that promote well-being.
Each programme will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical skills workshops, group activities and independent research activities, enriched by a programme of guest speakers from different areas of mental health and well-being who will support students to recognize industry standards, and to apply theory to practice.
The FdA Mental Health and Well-Being will each contain a practice learning element as an integral and core part of each award. Within the FdA, the practice learning element will take place in Year 2 as a central part of the module Practice Learning 1, which is designed to enable and support students to apply the theoretical and conceptual components of the programme to practice within an appropriate workplace setting (e.g. MIND the Mental Health Charity, community mental health services, e.g. the Samaritans, as well as broader health and care settings). Students will be required to reflect upon their professional practice, and identify how they can develop and enhance this within their individual workplace.
Students will also have the opportunity to undertake an independent work place based research project through which to demonstrate a sustained and critical engagement with a selected topic area.
It is anticipated that graduates of the FdA Mental Health and Well-Being will progress to a range of careers in the mental health and well-being sectors, for example, mental health support worker; rehabilitation support worker; health and well-being officer, mental health counsellor; suicide bereavement support; mental health advocacy; high intensity therapist; creative therapy support worker; substance misuse; elderly care worker etc.
