Course overview

Solent’s foundation year in science and engineering offers students a stimulating introduction to develop technical and academic skills before progressing to the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree. By the time you start the degree course you will have acquired an essential portfolio of academic and subject specific skills, giving you the very best chance of achieving a high-level degree.

Modules of study in the foundation year include a group technology project an exploration of information and analysis a theoretical and applied look at concepts and processes within technology and a project relating directly to your degree following the foundation. This ensures that the skills and knowledge which you develop during the foundation year will be directly applicable to your degree studies.

Throughout your time at foundation level you will benefit from a supportive and student focused approach to learning. The course team have significant experience of working with students from a diverse range of academic and professional backgrounds.

The integrated master's degree provides a stimulating and intellectually challenging programme of study to prepare you for an engineering or technology related career in a design or service-providing organisation.

The course has an emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving which aligns with industry demands for graduates who can hit the ground running. You'll study modules in automation, smart materials, and advanced manufacturing and will use tools such as CAD and simulation software commonly used within the industry. You'll also experience 'real-world' and work-based learning with opportunities to work on live briefs from industry.

As well as practical skills, you also develop your creative problem-solving skills to develop innovative and appropriate solutions to mechanical engineering problems, using emerging and existing technology. You'll also expand your business acumen with modules covering contracts, quality management, and business to increase your commercial awareness.
