Civil engineering is a diverse subject that involves the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical environment.
Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering that involves designing and analysing the strength, stability, and rigidity of structures such as building, bridges, dams, and tunnels.
This course is delivered at our Falkirk Campus for the first year and provides students with a sound understanding of civil engineering construction principles and techniques. The course is suitable for those seeking a career or progressing their careers in civil engineering design, or management and maintenance of infrastructure elements, such as construction of buildings, bridges, and rail.
Students study at Heriot-Watt University from year two and will develop knowledge of structures, elements, geotechnics, and hydraulics and hydrology, along with gaining design skills in transport design, infrastructure, and society.
At the end of year four, students can graduate with BEng (Hons) or stay for a further year and gain a Masters in Engineering (MENg) in either specialism.
