About the course

On this course, you'll have the opportunity to:- develop specialised expertise in the field of robotics- gain skills in mechanical engineering.This combination will make you highly employable in various industries – from designing and developing robots, to working on autonomous vehicles, automation, mechatronics, automotive, aerospace and renewable energy projects. You’ll also have the chance to apply for a placement to get work experience in industry, while still being supported by the Department at Sussex.Our teaching is based on our cutting-edge research in robotics, dynamics and control, sensors and flexible electronics. You’ll study in our state-of-the-art laboratories. There’s a new environment for:- constructing robots- programming embedded systems to control robots- using cutting-edge computer design and modelling facilities.You’ll have access to our flexible manufacturing system, industrial robotic manipulator, humanoid robots, a fleet of drones and autonomous vehicles. To ensure your success at Sussex, you’ll be supported by a dedicated academic adviser throughout your time with us. You’ll also benefit from a team of student mentors who are here to assist you on your academic journey. When you graduate, you’ll have the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to start your career. To help you gain experience and increase your employability, you can apply for an optional placement as part of your course. This can be a fantastic opportunity to gain real-life insight into industry as well as skills valued by employers. You’ll be responsible for applying for and securing your placement. Our dedicated careers team can help you:- find an employer- draft an application- prepare for interviews.Don’t worry if you’re not successful, you’ll simply transfer to a non-placement version of your course.


MEng or BEng?

We also offer this course as a three-year BEng without the industrial placement year, as a four-year MEng, or as a five-year MEng with an industrial placement year.

Study on our beautiful, green campus on the edge of the South Downs National Park and just minutes from the vibrant seaside city of Brighton & Hove. We’re near to Gatwick airport and just over an hour from London.

A-levels must include Mathematics, with at least grade B.You should have a broad range of GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.

Highers must include Mathematics, grade A. You should normally have an Advanced Higher in Mathematics (grade B).

Pass Diploma with at least 39 level 3 credits at Merit or above including 24 credits at Distinction.You will normally need A-level Mathematics, grade B, in addition to the Access to HE Diploma.All Access applicants will be assessed on a case by case basis.

We take the EPQ into account when considering your application and it can be useful in the summer when your results are released if you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer. We do not routinely include the EPQ in the conditions of your offer but we sometimes offer alternative conditions that include the EPQ.
