Mechanical Engineering - MEng (Hons)

University of Surrey

The fact that the library is no longer open for 24 hours drops down the facilities quite a lot. The rest of the facilities such as study spaces are not able to accommodate students who want to work late. The campus is nice, but a lot of the main buildings are very ugly, such as AC, AA etc. I can't really speak much on student life, as when I was living on campus last year, I was mainly in my room. But the societies are great. I love using the Beryl bikes to get around, but they need to be increases in quantity. Surrey is a great place, my family has lived here since the 60s, and I don't plan on moving. The staff and faculty really do seem to care which is nice, but sometimes the lecturers/professors aren't that great at doing their jobs, teaching. It's a shame as they know a lot, but lack the skills needed to teach. The town centre is quite nice, but not exactly made for the average student. If you want good value, cheap food when eating out, Guildford is not it, you'd be better off going to Woking.

Best thing is that university of Surrey actually care about students wheb they face circumstances that make thier journey more difficult, but they don’t care about your problems if its not uni related

I quite enjoy the lake on the Stag hill campus and the Front room however it'd be great if there were another room like the front room as its rather small. Depending on the lecture theatre it can be rather uncomfortable to sit, take notes due to perhaps a lack of space and a big connected table which all too annoying all too quickly especially if your in there for more than an hour honestly its terrible for your neck and back. A handful of lecturers have no energy, read off the slides and as well as that typically have a thick foreign accent making it difficult to decipher what they are saying which isn't the best when they're going through slides as if they're playing a game of cookie clicker at that point its better to just stay home or go in the library and go over the slides yourself but that's not nearly enough when learning a complex task. On the plus side there are a few lecturers who are really passionate about their modules and speak in an understandable manner and explain things in a way thay makes sense. With lecturers if you go to a tutorial and ask a question some lecturers will look down on you as if you are the lowest life form on the planet fortunately others while mentally insulting you or petrifying you with their condescending gazes still make an effort to help you understand and don't pressure you too much if you're really lucky then you'll get a lecturer or PhD student that explains the topic or problem with a warm and welcoming smile, positive attitude, helpful outlook and helps you understand the problem or question(s). It an almost be compared to a lottery. One of my favourite aspects of uni has to be the clubs and societies, if you try joining a large society it might seem rather overwhelming at first, however if you bring a friend to tag along with you it makes it much easier to socialise and make friends. There's a large number of clubs and societies, many if not all are student led which helps people on the students on the committees valuable skills and experience that might be valued in a workplace environment.

The facilities such as the workshop and the maker space. The wide range of societies to get involved in. The students union hosting multiple events.

The best aspects are football at the university and all of the societies especially at the cheaper prices, there’s not many notable bad aspects to be honest
