Programme Description

The general aim of this award is to develop the thinking, practical and personal skills of the student to the best of his or her ability. This is a two-year award suitable for students wishing to study on a full-time basis seeking a career in the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering profession at senior technician level.

Programme Features

The course units, outcomes and delivery:

  • Enable learners to demonstrate an appropriate level of problem solving skills as the basis for personal and professional development, so that they can work in a team, thereby contributing to their work environment.
  • Allow learners to apply their knowledge and understanding of engineering analysis and scientific principles.
  • Promotes an awareness of the management of quality, health and safety systems, environmental and sustainability issues.
  • Allows learners to process and analyse the information gained from laboratory work and project work for the solution of engineering problems.
  • Develops skills in information technology as applied to engineering and demonstrate competence in oral and written skills, enabling learners to work effectively as a team member.
  • Encourages learners to identify their own learning needs to enable them to progress and improve their educational base for professional development.
  • Develops a professional attitude in students towards their responsibilities as engineers to society.

Progression & Employment

Successful completion of the HND to a satisfactory standard will qualify students for entry to degree courses in related subjects within the UWTSD group. Careers that are directly related to this discipline include Mechanical Development Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, Production Engineer and Technical Sales. Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineers are employed by the manufacturing industry, service industries, the armed forces and research organisations.

In addition to five GCSE subjects at grade C or above, preferably to include Mathematics, English and a Science, the following minimum criteria will apply:GCE A/AS level, AS VCE single or double award/AVCE single or double award: Minimum of two A Levels or equivalent. Acceptable A level or subjects are Mathematics or a numerate Science such as Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Design Technology or Engineering.OrNational Certificate/Diploma/Extended Diploma, typically in Mechanical Engineering. Grades PP/PPP respectively, to include a Mathematics module and an additional analytical module such as Mechanics or Environmental Science.
