The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering is a rigorous specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and with a strong work related emphasis. The programme is designed to provide higher-level knowledge skills in electrical electronic engineering and mechanical engineering practice. At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector through four core units, including one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. The core units are: Unit 1: Engineering DesignUnit 2: Engineering MathematicsUnit 3: Engineering ScienceUnit 4: Managing a Professional Engineering ProjectGraduates successfully completing the course will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of engineering and develop the practical skills underpinning engineering. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will have the qualities of personal responsibility needed for employment. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent working with growing fault-finding and problem-solving strategies, and organisational awareness. The course works with employers to ensure that content is relevant for local employment needs. The resources available support learners to perfect their hand skills and knowledge of practical application of engineering knowledge, which is a key attraction to local businesses. The area is currently developing greater project-based learning to enhance core soft skills and project management’s skills to meet industry needs. Celebrating the learner achievement in the project showcase has been hugely important in linking students with employers and for students to make a full contribution to solving current engineering problems. This pathway is linked to Professional Body standards (where appropriate) and can provide progression towards professional status or entry to the later stages of an appropriate degree. At Level 5 students continue to build on the essential skills, knowledge and techniques necessary for all engineers whilst working through a larger number of subject-specific specialist and optional units. The two mandatory core units at Level 5 are:Unit 34: Research ProjectUnit 35: Professional Engineering Management. This two-year higher education course offers both theoretical and practical units combined with an extensive range of teaching and learning methods that enhance the learners’ knowledge and skill. Learners will develop an in-depth understanding of how to use theory and practice as a professional working in the industry. You will be taught in a nurturing environment with lots of expert support from our experienced and industry qualified tutors. They will teach you through a blend of lectures, guest speakers, seminars, case studies as well as individual and group work.Special features of this programme include:You can progress onto a final top-up year and achieve a full degree at our Chichester campus. Opportunity to tailor your HND through optional unitsSmall group sizes ensure you get the support you need to succeedIn May every year the college displays student project work to local enterprise groups, employers, universities and the local Gatwick Diamond community as part of Sussex’s STEMfest programme. STEM buildingThe college has unveiled plans to build a multi-million pound facility at Crawley College that will put the college at the cutting edge of training delivery in computing. The new building will be home to a suite of modern teaching and interactive spaces, which will be used to integrate the use of technology and STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) in to its curriculum.Building work began in January 2020, and the building is set t
