Why choose this course?
This is a research degree designed for practising medical professionals who wish to undertake research in their chosen speciality and enhance their career in the profession. Expert mentoring and supervision is provided by internationally-recognised professor-level senior consultants who are members of the University’s Clinical Medicine Research Centre (CMRC) within the School of Medicine and Clinical Practice (SMCP).
What happens on the course?
This course aims to provide advanced clinical research skills and training to assist the students in pursuing their career in medicine and to enhance their patient-care in a manner that is informed by an in-depth understanding of the research evidence underpinning their chosen speciality. You will undertake a two year research project and produce a thesis which is examined in a viva in the same way as for a PhD. You will be encouraged to discuss your research plans with a mentor in your specialism and will then be assigned supervisors in the field.
Career Paths
The course is designed for mid-career medical practitioners who wish to reinforce their research standing and to build a career in research-active clinical environments such as that found in top medical schools.
Students need a UK recognised medical qualification e.g. MBChB, MBBS. Registration with the GMC of the UK. A minimum of two years clinical practice following GMC registration, with an additional year in specialist practice.
