The MArch is designed to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in your chosen career. The architecture programmes at Northumbria are all framed in relation to a common ethos and approach. Design practice is at the core of all of our architecture programmes. Design is the means by which we can understand, speculate about, and then enact a change in the material world. The Master of Architecture (MArch) programme is structured in two, inter-related strands: Design (practice and research) and Theory (research and critical practice). In the MArch design modules comprise 50% of year one and 75% of year two (the ‘design thesis). The MArch course fulfils the ARB/RIBA Part II requirements for professional accreditation, and will enable you to develop the higher level skills of design and research needed to support self-directed architectural design projects, and to shape your future career. The majority of MArch graduates secure positions in national and international design-led architectural practices. Many of the skills developed through the programme are transferrable, including autonomous learning, critical curiosity, social responsibility and both manual and digital communication skills. The skills acquired through the course have enabled our graduates to diversify into such fields as construction, BIM, visualisation, property development, urban design, set design, project management and housing, as well as to continue into doctoral studies.
Standard Entry: A minimum of a 2:1 honours degree from a Part 1 accredited Architectural course, or equivalent and a minimum of three months relevant postgraduate work experience. Applicants are required to submit an online portfolio with their application.
