The emerging prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across all areas of our modern world accelerates the need to actively address the ethical and theoretical challenges that arise in connection with the uses of data and application of AI.

Poised at the intersection of the humanities and technology, this innovative Masters degree can equip you with the combination of thinking, communication, and technical skills widely sought in sectors ranging from professional services, to the creative industries and government.

Why Choose our MA Philosophy & AI?

The MA Philosophy & Artificial Intelligence can function as a conversion Masters programme and requires no academic background in Philosophy or programming.

  • Includes core courses exploring classic Philosophy texts and debates alongside the key ethical issues that are emerging in Data Science and AI.
  • Offers students the flexibility to choose between acquiring computer programming and data analytics skills, or alternatively undertaking additional in-depth Philosophy courses.
  • Provides the opportunity for students to gain coding experience in Python and to undertake assignments that use data science to solve problems.
  • Culminates in the research, preparation and written and verbal communication of a 10,000-12,000-word interdisciplinary dissertation, conducted under the supervision by a member of faculty.
  • Builds a critical and practical understanding of how philosophical thought is beneficial to the development of AI and the ethical use of data.
  • Functions as an exceptional springboard for future academic study of Philosophy at PhD level.
  • Offers the opportunity to stay and work in the UK for up to two years after graduation via the Graduate Route Visa (Post Study Work).
  • Unlocks alumni discount for further educational programmes across the Northeastern University global campus network.

Introduction

The MA Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence combines exploration of a range of philosophical issues, including ethical issues related to computer data, with opportunities to develop the skills and techniques of data science. Poised at the intersection of the humanities and technology, this innovative masters degree can equip you with the combination of thinking, communication, and technical skills currently sought by employers in sectors ranging from financial and professional services, to the creative industries, government and policy-making.

Presupposing no background in either philosophy or programming, it ensures students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for graduate study in philosophy, and offers opportunities to acquire relevant coding abilities, and knowledge of the techniques of data science that underpin recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence, should students so desire.

At the same time, the programme allows for a progressive exploration of ethical and other philosophical issues arising in this area, with courses directly addressing them, and a dissertation devoted to a detailed investigation of an approved topic of the student’s choosing.
