Collaborating with cinematography, editing, producing and scriptwriting master’s students on a series of production assignments, you will have the opportunity to build your director’s portfolio. Individually, directors will take two directing modules concentrating on specific elements of the director’s craft, communicating with actors and sound design for storytelling, in the latter module you will undertake a series of practical exercises in partnership with post-graduate sound specialists to expand your awareness of how to collaborate effectively with sound designers in an industry context.
Students will have the opportunity of gaining valuable work experience at a Cardiff (or Bristol) film production company working on international drama productions on location or in one of the big local studios. You will also learn from Industry masterclasses, guest lectures and networking with industry professionals.
Teaching
Students on the MA Film course will be taught by means of workshops, seminars, lectures and tutorials, as well as guest lectures and masterclasses from industry professionals.
Assessment
Assessment will be via a series of practical assessments based around live briefs and production projects (70%), combined with written reflections and critical analysis of students’ work (30%).
CAREERS
You will graduate as a highly informed and skilled practitioner, ready to work in the film industry and make a significant contribution to your chosen specialism.
Graduates can also progress to a PhD or research degree.
A minimum 2:2 Honours degree in a relevant discipline or appropriate professional qualification; or an HND/HNC and relevant experience; or equivalent international qualifications. Those without such qualifications will be considered on an individual basis, where prior experience will be taken into account.
