Introduction

Whatever educational setting you work in, and whatever the stage of your career and the role you currently do, our MA Education offers the opportunity to develop and enhance your professional skills and understanding of contemporary professional practice. Whether you’re a classroom teacher or in a managerial or leadership role, whether you have a number of years of experience or you’re at the start of your career, studying for the MA Education will make a highly valuable contribution to your continuing professional development and be useful evidence for meeting performance objectives.

With content relating to schools, further and higher education institutions and other educational settings that reflects global approaches to educational policy and social justice, this is a course with broad appeal. With the opportunity to tailor your studies and carry out research to focus on your particular interests, you'll certainly find opportunities to link the new theories you learn with your everyday practice, enhancing and improving the pupil or student experience in your place of work. Studying alongside people from a range of different backgrounds and fields of education will also enrich your student experience.

How you'll be assessed

We use a range of assessment methods to demonstrate your developing knowledge and theoretical understanding. Assessments will also expand the skills you’ll need in practice to best support young children and their families. And you’ll be able to show how you’ve developed specialist knowledge in your chosen area of expertise to support your own career success and that of others in our field. Instead of sitting exams, you’ll benefit from preparing high quality written assignments. These build up throughout each module, with opportunities for peer and tutor feedback as you learn. You’ll develop core strengths in valuable appraisal methods, such as the ability to carry out individual and collaborative critical reflections. You’ll also carry out enquiries applied directly to your specific interests and context. Each assignment will progress your learning, assessing your ability to communicate with clarity, both verbally and in written reports aimed at a range of audiences.

Careers

Our course is designed for professionals who want to develop their expertise and knowledge of educational issues of schools, further and higher education institutions, and other educational settings. The course provides opportunities to focus on and critique learning, teaching and educational leadership. It is an excellent choice for continuing professional development for teachers and lecturers at all levels, as well as leaders and managers within the educational system. The course is also open to recently qualified and early career teachers who want to advance their learning alongside developing their teaching practice. This course can also be the first step towards working in research or university lecturing and can be a pathway to a PhD or EdD.
