University of Derby

I have been at the University of Derby for over 4 years, starting with a Foundation Programme Joint Honours, to completing my undergraduate in LLB Law and now having started my postgraduate in LLM and found the support available for students is immense, but you must speak to your tutors to be able to get the support. Unfortunately, I suffered from Covid which led me to have Long-Covid and then 13 deaths in one year, if it had not been for the support of my module leader (who also is the Assistant Head of Law School), I probably would not have graduated this year or studying for my postgrad. Additionally, I was supported by the Student Wellbeing staff who have been fantastic in providing me with a support plan to be able to complete my studies without being worried about falling behind with deadlines, having to discuss with every tutor about my personal life situation or being cornered. The university facilities are brilliant, for example, the main campus has the largest library and I was based at a different campus. But having the option to collect books from your campus has been a godsend, especially when my health was declining. It is not something I have seen or heard anywhere else. Besides the university being quite modern and catering to people from all kinds of walks, their social spaces, computer rooms and meeting rooms are spacious, open to everyone and several within campuses so you don't have to wait for someone to come out before you can do your meeting. This allowed me to work with my time without having to worry about booking a room or going elsewhere. Due to several personal life issues, I did not get to do much with my Student life but having been going out or walking to other campuses showed me the several landmarks and attractions within Derby. I felt quite content in Derby as it is not a huge city (I live in Birmingham), though it is a smaller town it has got the modern feel to it at the same time you can see the amazing decade-old buildings to admire. I have felt much happier than I was at school or college, I couldn't think of the worst thing about my university. I would though suggest creating parking or car parks as there is not enough car parking available, as there are too many of us with cars and commuting to the University and its not easy to find spaces. Being here for 4 years, I have seen the growth of the University of Derby in students, facilities, accommodating to students' desires to study specific degrees and masters, as well as international students coming to be able to do their degrees. Derby has gone strength to strength like most of us students who suffered with the pandemic and never-ending lockdowns.
