Our LLM in Legal Practice at the Bar brings together the essential practical skills and knowledge from our Bar Training Course (BTC) and masters-level legal research skills that can help you stand out in a competitive jobs market. Everything about the BTC element of the course is built to prepare you for life as a barrister. You'll work with other students in a mini chambers group, designed to mirror the real-life practices you'll face in a career at the bar. You’ll further prepare for the demands of the Bar with our innovative professional practice unit, under the mentorship of a practising barrister. Meanwhile, the LLM advanced study element offers the chance for you to deepen your knowledge in a specialist area of the law. You’ll learn from a team that includes seasoned barristers, solicitors and members of the judiciary, together with active researchers and scholars who produce impactful legal research in the UK and internationally. Combined with the strong links we’ve built with the legal profession, both locally and across the Northern Circuit, this is a very professionally-focused course. Put simply, if you want to get onto the path to practice, while building your legal research knowledge and skills, this is an ideal environment for developing the resilience, confidence and leadership you’ll need to thrive at the Bar or a related legal field.
Career prospects
This course combines both professional and academic study. While your course work will give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a successful legal career, we’ll be here to help prepare you for pupillage, with a practical focus and a range of professional connections. From the start, we’ll help you develop your network with local practitioners through guest lectures, mentors and employer events.
The LLM element of the course is a useful addition if you want to pursue a future in a specialist area of law, while the BTC is built around everything you need to become a barrister. However, with the skills you’ll learn throughout your time with us, you can pave the way for a much wider range of careers across the legal or related sectors.
Bar students are selected primarily on academic ability. To be considered for a place on the LLM in Legal Practice at the Bar you will need to satisfy one of the following criteria: You will have an LLB degree from an institution based in the UK/Republic of Ireland which included the seven foundation subjects (Contract Law, Tort, Criminal Law, EU Law, Public Law, Land Law and Equity and Trusts) with a minimum grade of 55% (2:2)*, OR you will have a non-law degree (with a minimum grade of 55%) from an institution based in the UK/Republic of Ireland and have successfully completed an eligible conversion course, which included the seven foundation subjects, at a UK/Republic of Ireland institution (such as the GDL) with a minimum grade of 55%. In exceptional circumstances, higher level qualifications such as a masters degree (with an overall grade of 55% or above) may be considered if your LLB or conversion course grade falls below the minimum requirement for this course. All offers are subject to the condition that students successfully complete the academic stage of their training to the Bar Standards Boards satisfaction and have enrolled as a student member of one of the four Inns of Court. For more information, requirements for the academic stage are set out in Part 2 of the Bar Qualification Manual. You will need to apply to join one of the four Inns of Court (Grays Inn, Inner Temple, Lincolns Inn, Middle Temple) no later than 12 weeks prior to the start of this course. This means that to begin the course in early September 2024, you will need to have joined an Inn by early June 2024 (exact dates to be confirmed in due course). Please note, the requirements for being called to the Bar by an Inn of Court will include an additional criminal records check.
