We offer research supervision in a wide range of subdisciplines of English language and linguistics. Areas of Study

We particularly welcome applications in the areas of:

  • descriptive grammar (including typological approaches) and/or theoretical syntax
  • discourse analysis (especially political and media discourse, discourse of identity, corpus linguistic approaches)
  • language variation and change
  • morphology, phonology, orthography
  • pragmatics (including intercultural pragmatics and im/politeness)
  • semantics, lexicology, (meta)lexicography
  • stylistics.

Degree requirements: You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Master’s degree. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in English language or linguistics or a related subject area. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
