Course Overview

This is a professional qualification for those already employed in the Engineering industry and wishing to enhance career prospects. It is a two-year part time day release course combining work and study.

Students gain knowledge and experience in analysing and working with electrical principles applicable to current technologies and develop knowledge and undertake a range of hands on projects mixed with academic theory. During your course we will support developing key skills, including maths, problem solving, decision making, IT and communication.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to progress onto an HND or further related study at a higher level.

Mature students are welcome.

Course Content

On this course the subjects covered include; -

  • Year One:Analytical methods for Engineers, Digital & Analogue devices & circuits, Electrical & Electronic principles, Engineering Science.
  • Year Two: Applications of Power electronics, Combinational and sequential logic, Electrical & Electronic measurement & testing, Project, design, implementation & evaluation.
  • The Engineering Project/Design units give you an opportunity to design and implement a solution to an engineering problem that is relevant to your company.

Assessment

You will be assessed by producing evidence that meets the outcomes of each unit usually through the form of assessments.

The assessment is continuous and includes projects and presentations together with any work-related projects that may meet the requirements. It is likely that the evidence provided will include and involve real work based projects from your employer.

Class work will include group work, discussions and formative assessments.

Where does this course lead to

The successful completion of this course provides the learner with the progression to further Higher Education programmes such as a HND or a Degree.

The qualification is recognised by the professional bodies towards registration as a professional engineer. The college is recognised with the IET and IMECH and will be able to help with an application for these professional bodies.

GCSE/National 4/National 5:

C - A Grades / Points required

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016):

M Grades / Points required

An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution; A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent); Other related Level 3 qualifications; related work experience; An international equivalent of the above. Candidates must also have qualifications for English and maths at Level 2. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificates or proof that you have completed the required courses at your interview.

A* to C grade and/or 9 to 4 in GCSE maths (or equivalent) is strongly recommended.

A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering. It is recommended that you hold this qualification at a Merit grade due to the complex level of maths that is involved.
