This Masters programme offers a comprehensive understanding of theories, practices, and policies in language and literacy education. The programme is rooted in the science of reading and will empower graduates to critically evaluate oral language and literacy intervention, pedagogy, and assessment methods, becoming champions for advancing literacy proficiency. You will study theories of language and literacy development, evidence-based assessment and instruction in reading and writing, cognition and learning, and the intricate landscape of policy and politics surrounding language and literacy education.

WHY THIS PROGRAMME

This programme addresses the literacy achievement gap associated with poverty. Studies show that delays in oral language development among disadvantaged children are the primary cause of literacy difficulties. You will become equipped to address these challenges with evidence-based practices.

Grounded in the science of reading and literacy development, this Masters fills a critical gap in evidence-based practice in education. It emphasises the importance of early oral language skills, offers targeted literacy interventions and goes beyond traditional approaches.

The programme equips educators with the expertise to identify, evaluate, and implement effective oral language and literacy interventions. It bridges the gap in metalinguistic and reading science knowledge among teachers, enhancing their ability to provide evidence-based literacy instruction in the classroom.

This programme is tailored to the professional development needs of educators, including teachers, education practitioners, senior leaders, policymakers, and researchers, who seek to enhance their literacy development knowledge and evidence-based assessment and intervention skills.
