For students to consolidate grammatical accuracy and knowledge of vocational and academic lexis in written and spoken English; to further develop critical awareness of features of written and spoken texts such as discourse, register and appropriateness of style; to broaden their range of writing skills to a higher level of fluency and refine usage and command of style and register; gain a better understanding of the need to use clear and consistent systems of referencing and an ability to put such systems into practice.
The dissertation is a key element of the MA degree. It is the point where knowledge and understanding acquired through the earlier taught modules is synthesised and applied to a substantial management problem. Students reaching this level of study will have successfully completed a range of taught modules, including research methods. This module is designed to build on that knowledge and provide a supported learning environment in which students can plan a more thorough research enquiry of their own choosing. The key outcome of the module is the report of an investigation into an issue of importance. The overall aim of this module is to help students develop in depth knowledge of entrepreneurship within the context of the hospitality, events and tourism sectors and promote entrepreneurship as a career choice.
This module aims to develop students' understanding of the nature of the live arts and entertainment industry and to develop students' management expertise in this high-profile area of the events industry. Live entertainment events are a prominent constituent of the events industry around the world. These events not only generate ticket revenue for promoters, artists, and venues but also help to brand cities and regions and thereby generate additional economic activity. A global perspective is taken using examples from the UK and around the world. London in particular is renowned for their wealth of live entertainment offerings ranging from West End theatre to large scale outdoor music festivals, fashion shows to feature film debuts, and underground night-clubs to major venues such as The O2 Arena, Wembley Arena and London's South Bank. It is important, therefore, for events management students to be knowledgeable in this vibrant area of the events industry.
The module aims to examine the management of culturally diverse events organisations. By "culture" we mean not only national and ethnic cultures, but also organisations culture. Drawing from advanced research on the impact of national and sub-cultures on organisations, the module seeks to explore the effects of cultural diversity and organisational culture on major management processes, communications, and leadership. The management of international events businesses featuring cross-cultural workforces, clients and suppliers is a central focus and there is a strong emphasis on similarities and differences between Anglo-American, European, Asian and other World cultures. The module aims to provide important professional expertise for contemporary human resource and international business management within the events industry. General theories of human motivation, human resource management, and personal influence are also addressed.
The aim of the module is to equip students with the strategic and practical knowledge and skills that they will require in order to successfully plan and deliver a live event with high levels of service quality. The teaching and learning on the course will support students to understand how to manage the special demands and problems of events as time-bound projects which encompass numerous critical one-off activities in their preparation and delivery, and to critically evaluate their success.
The aim of this course is to reflect on the role of relationship marketing as a paradigm, strategy and activity in the changing landscape of marketing. Students will critically examine the key concepts and theories of relationship marketing in various contexts: on and offline, business and customer relationships, dyads and networks. The newer field of experiential marketing will also be introduced and events will be explored as platforms for creating customer experiences and building relationships. Students will be encouraged to relate theory to the practice of managing customer relationships.
This Module aims to serve two functions; firstly to support students to develop their skills in a range of research methods that will enhance their ability to gather and analyse information as part of their academic study or in their careers as managers. Secondly, the assessment for this Module requires students to produce a research proposal that, for Master?s students, will become the basis of their final dissertation. This Module aims to cover key areas of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. The Module aims to provide students the opportunity to discuss research issues with research-active staff from the department.
