The LLM in International Commercial Law gives you specialist knowledge of the regulation of international commerce, and a thorough understanding of the broader social, economic and political contexts which shape modern commercial law and practice. The course offers a wide range of modules that are contemporary, academically rigorous and skills oriented. You'll gain core knowledge of the framework and regulatory environment of modern commerce whilst having the flexibility to tailor your degree to suit your particular interests and career aspirations by choosing from a range of specialist commercial law modules (and optional modules from the School of Management). Whatever your choice, your studies will examine key contemporary issues such as developments in information technology, free trade and trade protectionism, Brexit, and sustainability.

The aim of the module is part of the induction to the LLM programmes of the School of Law, providing an introduction to the English and International Legal Systems and the sources of Law, and key academic skills, including research and analytical skills. The module is compulsory to all students joining the LLM programmes and is particularly useful to you if you have not previously studied law or come from a non-common law background. The module will equip you with knowledge of sources and institutions of law, which is essential to allow you to successfully complete the LLM.

This module will provide a theoretical underpinning to enable you to deconstruct the various forms of regulatory theory within a legal context. Three key questions will be initially discussed to enable a broad foundation to be established: Is regulation necessary at all? What approach to regulation should be adopted? and What should the regulatory architecture be comprised of?

This module aims to provide an appreciation of the international law of sustainable development by introducing key international legal frameworks and institutions related to sustainable development and by looking into certain important areas where international sustainable development law is being implemented.
