The university atmosphere and staff library, reception and the tutor are the excellent resources available to students, fostering an environment where academic growth and personal development can thrive. With dedicated mentors and innovative programs, learners are supported every step of the way. Although, making friends is quite difficult for me, it could be because my asian appearance, the students tends to just make all black groups and also white in the different groups. This separation can be challenging, but I am determined to find my place and connect with others who share similar interests and values. Engaging in campus activities and reaching out to diverse organizations may help bridge these gaps and foster meaningful relationships. I do not expect to be friends outside university , but I hope to create a supportive network within this environment. By actively participating and being open to new experiences, I believe I can cultivate friendships that enrich my university life.

The library is such a great place to relax and study. And the staff there are so nice, always ready to help. Course quality and delivery is also pretty great. We get a lot of workshops from professionals working in the field so our leaning has a practical feel to it even when we’re studying theoretical stuff

The best aspects of my uni experience so far has been the great campus which includes everything you could possibly need, especially if you are in lectures all day, this includes the large library. The worst aspect was my uni placement which was a bit far however it was definitely valuable and I had a great experience there.

Uni of Derby is a really friendly and supportive place to study. Lecturers are approachable, classes feel more personal, and there’s lots of help if you need it. The courses are practical and focused on real careers, and Derby itself is affordable and easy to get around. It just feels like a place where you’re supported and not just another number.

For me, what makes the University of Derby such a great place to study is how supportive and practice-focused it feels. As a first-year social work student, I’ve really valued how our learning isn’t just theoretical — it connects directly to real-life practice. From skills days to placement preparation, I feel like we’re genuinely being prepared for the realities of professional social work, not just assignments. The lecturers are approachable and open to conversation, which makes a huge difference. I’ve felt comfortable asking questions and reflecting on my development, especially around linking my learning to the PCF domains and Social Work England standards. That supportive environment helps build confidence, particularly when transitioning from classroom learning to placement. I also appreciate that Derby recognises that many students, like me, balance studying with work and personal responsibilities. There seems to be an understanding that we’re not just students — we’re individuals with real-life pressures — and that flexibility matters. Another strength is the emphasis on reflective practice. As someone who wants to continue developing professionally (and possibly pursue a master’s in the future), I feel encouraged to think critically about my growth rather than just aiming to pass assessments. One area that could be improved is clearer feedback and transparency around marking. When you put significant effort into assignments or presentations, it’s important to fully understand how marks are awarded and how to improve. More detailed feedback or opportunities to discuss grades in depth would help students feel more confident in the assessment process. It would also be beneficial to have even more practical simulation opportunities before placement — especially for those of us who want to feel as prepared as possible stepping into real-world practice settings.
