You'll be supported by a small team of supervisors who'll be experts in your chosen field. Your supervisors will help you choose your research project and make sure it provides scope for originality of thought and the development of research skills. You'll receive comprehensive training in statistics, critical appraisal and laboratory techniques. You'll also receive training in transferable skills such as communication, presentation skills, teaching and supervision, academic writing and entrepreneurship. In addition to your supervisory team, you'll have access to further support through:student and staff representativesa team of pastoral advisersthe Life Sciences Postgraduate Society, which is a student-run societythe Medicine Postdoctoral Association which runs expert seminars providing insight into the practical experiencethe Graduate School which provides the administrative framework for your research programme from initial application to the final award of your degree
For both the PhD and the iPhD you should have a 2:1 honours undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification. In addition, there are specific entry requirements for the iPhD degree. As well as academic qualifications and practical experience, we look for evidence of your interest in the programme and an understanding of the rigorous demands of postgraduate research. For the DM programme you should hold a medical degree which is recognised by the UK General Medical Council. We normally require you to be employed in either a clinical or research role within University Hospitals Southampton or other Trust affiliated organisations. Applicants must hold a 1st class or 2:1 degree in life, physical or mathematical sciences. With a life-sciences degree, maths, statistics or computing modules at A-Level or above are desirable. With a physics or maths degree, life-sciences modules at undergraduate level are essential.
