You will gain knowledge in employment relations, workplace behaviours and the practice of good people-management. On this course, you will learn about the key issues in human resource management (HRM). You will gain knowledge in employment relations, workplace behaviours and the practice of good people-management. You will explore:

  • internal and external factors that give shape to complex HR ideas and practices. This includes firm strategy, market dynamics, national and supranational governance, demographic and technological trends, and political-ideological contexts
  • HR issues from the perspective of the strategy of an individual firm, and the external context of labour markets, employment relations and employment trends
  • assessing and improving employee engagement, and evaluating the effectiveness of employee-engagement strategies
  • financial and managerial aspects including turnover assessment, recruitment, retention, retirement, redundancy, dismissal, succession planning and talent management
  • the interplay between firm-level management practices and employee experiences including motivation, engagement, identity-formation, negotiation, participation, and representation.

You will learn from nationally and internationally recognised scholars in a wide range of HRM areas. You will have the opportunity to take part in activities including CIPD conferences, employer visits and practitioner seminars.

We offer advanced research methods training and the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research. This prepares you for further study at PhD level or for a career in research consultancies and research institutes.
