Our course explores some of the fundamental issues, events, and ideas that have shaped the modern world, from the Enlightenment and the discovery of the New World, religious upheaval, the rise of European empires, slavery, the birth of nation states, to the onset of global conflict in the 20th century, totalitarian movements, decolonisation, and movements for social justice. Our degree is particularly focused on how the past can be understood through lenses of race, class, and gender, and how historical interpretations are expressed through contemporary popular culture and memory. Our teaching is uniquely focused on a seminar-style approach, meaning you will spend more time working closely with subject experts in American, Soviet, British and European history. You’ll be in small interactive classes that involve activities such as discussions, debates, and hands-on workshops, allowing you to make the most of class time while developing key critical skills and confidence. You will also ‘do’ history and develop key skills that will prepare you for life after graduation. You will get to conduct original research for the Cotswold Centre for History and Heritage, and produce exhibitions for the Gloucester History Festival, working on your investigation, teamwork, and communication skills. You can also choose to study abroad and go on international field trips to places such as Washington DC. Experiences such as these will help you for a range of fascinating careers.
