Course Overview
Designed to act as a pathway for talented singers to benefit from focused study and support before undertaking the two-year MMus Music Performance, this course forms the ideal bridge between a bachelor’s degree and master’s study. It also offers a stand-alone opportunity for one year’s intensive study of classical vocal performance for talented singers wanting to develop their skills further. This programme enables classical singers from non-traditional backgrounds to access high-level conservatoire training.
Within the Graduate Diploma, areas of focus will include:
•
Tailored one-to-one tuition from an experienced tutor and vocal coach
•
Detailed work on key operatic languages and strategies for independent learning
•
Developing performance stamina in a range of environments (solo and ensemble)
•
An introduction to a variety of vocal styles, to reflect the complexity of material required at master’s level
•
Developing the physical skills and stagecraft for authentic characterisation in performance
•
Using spoken word and text, improvisation and drama training to build confidence and develop individual performing persona
•
Raising awareness of professional etiquette and associated protocols, including presentation of self, as well as building effective skills of self-management
•
Developing an awareness of collaborative working in choral and operatic contexts
•
Demonstrating technical and musical fluency in performance, with individuality and stylistic integrity
•
Embedding strategies to support personal and professional development
•
Attendance at performances and masterclasses within the RWCMD’s public performance programme, as well as external events and activities, such as dress rehearsals at Welsh National Opera
•
Active participation in a range of performance opportunities in world-class facilities
Immersion in the fully integrated performance programme by international artists.
Entry is by audition and candidates should be able to demonstrate a level of performance ability appropriate for professional training. Minimum entry requirements usually include an undergraduate degree in music or an equivalent qualification. Candidates who have been studying or working in another field will be considered.
