University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I love Bangor University, the close community, the wide range of subjects with current researchers as your lecturers, they have your best interests at heart and really want to help you. There are many societies to join in with, everything from charities to the weird and wonderful. I can guarantee you shall be dressing up as something silly at least once, but no body shall even bat an eyelid as you walk down the high street. The accommodation for first years is a perfect stepping stone from leaving the parental home, with many people in the same boat you make great friends and are close by to all the other students. It's not a big city but everything is not far away.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Great access to printers, although a little sparse on computers (although most students have a laptop). The Libraries are great and open 24hrs plus we have electronic resources to download. Psychology, chemistry, animal science and sport science is all well equipt. The lecture rooms are big and always have a projector and a computer, with plenty of seats, plus a number of small seminar rooms which are very useful.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The student services are great and help with everything from financial support to counselling, university stress, housing, disabilities both mental and physical, foreign students.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Our students union is very active, in our university, in our community and with other universities too, they have made very useful changes like a 24hr library. They run course representatives which help students actively have a voice within their schools, and peer guides so that freshers always have someone there in the first semester.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The city is small, although not short on cafes and pubs, there are not many shops and no cinema. It's very outdoorsy, with hiking societies and surfing societies. But there is no metropolitan feel, and with only 2/3 clubs it can get boring going to the same clubs all the time. Although the best and cheapest club is the one run by the university's Students Union itself, Academi.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
The students union have societies for everything from the Bangor Lego team, to surfing, poker and pole dancing to the beer society and Ukulele society. All the societies are FREE to join too. They hold a big fair twice a year so that you can see all the societies available to join, plus give away a lot of free stuff.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
All of my lecturers are current researching lecturers which makes all our subjects up to date too, there are a wide range of modules available. The lecturers are great with any problems with the work and give good feedback quickly. I know many lecturers that offer an open door policy where you can just drop by for a chat if needs be and are quick replying to emails. Most of the compulsory resources for your modules shall be available in the library too.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
All my friends who left last year, from a broad range of subjects from History to Psychology to Chemistry, have all moved into full time employment or postgraduate study. They also run an employability award scheme in which you can earn points for things you do in the university.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Good, secure, affordable accommodation in a close community, an easy distance from the university and city. It has everything students might need, plus the bedrooms are spacious. On the accommodation sites there are a few launderettes, a cafe, a bar, a shop and a gym, plus security and a post collection service.
