Examine the human and physical processes that have shaped today's world, both inside and outside of the lecture theatre.
Course overview
Geographers at Chester are as likely to be analysing earth surface materials or studying cultural interpretations of landscape, as to be using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to map the carbon footprint of a rural community. This ensures that you will have the opportunity to develop the skills required by employers.
Why study this course with us?
Our distinct and contemporary course is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society and focuses on the pressing environmental issues facing today's societies. The flexibility of the course allows specialism in a range of human and physical geography sub-disciplines, or to study a balanced mixture. Opportunities for overseas fieldwork will provide you with a greater understanding of places, whilst specialist training in GIS, laboratory analytical and social survey methods will facilitate enquiry into environmental processes, spatial patterns and societal issues. You will graduate with a wide range of employment-related skills and knowledge, having had the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience in a full-time placement.
Teaching methods
You will learn through lectures, workshop practicals, seminars, tutorials, group projects, fieldwork, laboratory work and online digital resources – as well as through one-to-one work with tutors in the case of dissertations and individual project work.
Assessment
The majority of assessment is through continuous coursework assignments, complemented by some end-of-module examinations. The Department engages in a wide variety of innovative coursework assignments, including podcasting, oral presentations/posters, briefing papers, consultancy reports and essays.
Job prospects
The knowledge, skills and understanding you will gain during the course will allow you to pursue a wide range of careers. Our graduates work in professions across a range of sectors, including environmental management, consultancy, teaching, town planning, renewable energy, sustainability, flood risk management and surveying. Some of our graduates continue their studies and go on to gain PhDs, masters degrees and professional qualifications.
