Course highlights The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in French studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests. Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from the Middle Ages to the present day. We're home to one of the UK's largest academic communities of researchers exploring the European national cultures. Conduct your PhD research from anywhere in the world through our online distance learning option. Course overview Do you want to be part of a stimulating research environment? Join an impactful Modern Languages department and undertake research in French studies. Enjoy a full programme of research training. With an extensive range of specialisms and a research network exploring Francophone culture and colonialism, we'll support you to contribute original research to the field of French Studies.
You will need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area. Your academic and professional qualifications, or any relevant professional experience, will normally be taken into account and, in some cases, may form an integral part of the entrance requirements. If you are applying for a distance learning research programme, you will also need to show that you have the time, commitment, facilities, and experience to study by distance learning. You will normally be required to submit a research proposal, which should typically be 1,000–1,500 words for Arts programmes and around 2,500 words for Law programmes.
