Course overview

FinTech is at the heart of the new digital ecosystem emerging across financial services. With the development of fast-growing financial technologies and the fact that businesses are becoming more consumer-oriented, there is a pressing need for experts who possess a wide range of FinTech skills.

  • Obtain the skills required in the intersection of financial services and technology in an ever-changing technology-driven and technology-enabled financial ecosystem.
  • Develop technical computing/software engineering skills by building end-to-end projects, alongside elements of entrepreneurship, innovation, regulation, critical thinking and decision making.
  • Study the 18-month Extended Professional Practice route, to gain more practical insights and in-depth experience.

Careers and opportunities

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Compare the main pillars of FinTech relating to the structure, transformation, disruption, risk and regulations.
  • Evaluate current technological problems, developments and/or new insights within the financial industry.
  • Argue about the economic, political, regulatory and social environments in which FinTech operates and the ethical considerations embedded in these global and societal operations.
  • Evaluate various finance theories and techniques and practical skills of interpreting models to apply them to different asset classes in the context of FinTech.
  • Select sources and content of financial data and evidence and independently use appropriate programming, statistical and econometrics skills for sound decision-making.
  • Evaluate financial innovative ideas by blending the business knowledge and technical skills required in a range of areas in FinTech.
  • Select effective, rigorous and reflective skills of self-management and independence in terms of planning, behaviour, motivation, individual initiative and enterprise.
  • Evaluate a range of complex and pervasive issues with the use of quantitative and qualitative research and techniques in a systematic, creative and innovative manner.
  • Graduates will emerge with a set of highly employable behaviours, attitudes and competencies which are in high demand among employers and are indispensable qualities within the FinTech industry.

Entry requirements

An honours undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2) in Finance, Economics, Computer Science or any other area with a strong quantitative background or equivalent is required. Other applications, where the entry requirements have not been met but professional qualifications (equivalent to level 6) can be evidenced, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Finance related work experience in private, public or third sectors (a minimum of two years would be desirable) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
