Finance and economics are key to understanding how businesses operate, governments implement policies, and countries compete with each other. This course gives you the personal and professional skills you need to be a key player in today’s global knowledge-based economic landscape. It provides you with an intimate understanding of the structural issues economies face and the way they are being realised in the modern world through the dominance of financial institutions.What will you study?Studying our Financial Economics MSc course will equip you with the in-depth knowledge and skills in the combined areas of modern economics and finance. Our unit in Economics and Financial Markets will allow you to explore the core principles of microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial markets, institutions and their practical application. You will analyse the functions of a financial system and identify key financial instruments alongside comparing the differences in financial systems between countries.Similarly, our unit in Advanced Management Accounting will provide you with a critical understanding of tools and techniques used in management to make decisions, maximise revenue and minimise cost. Through combining management accounting and financial planning, you will learn to make effective management decisions in order to drive successful businesses. Aside from this, you will assess theories of International Trade and Monetary Policy to discover how countries exchange goods and services, manage international migration and facilitate foreign direct investment flows.This unit will explore the reason behind restrictions or regulations on international trade and the implications of these policies on economic welfare. This includes analysing the operations of international and European monetary systems, its advancements and challenges. Alongside this, you will consider real-world issues such as balance of payment problems, causes of exchange rate movements and the impact of economic connections between countries.Furthermore, you will develop a critical and informed understanding of business environments and the business opportunities within them in our Strategy unit. Here, you will be introduced to a range of tools and concepts for strategic analysis and business modelling that will allow you to assess the strategic position of business organisations, formulate strategies, evaluate options and implement strategic decisions. Finally, you will complete our Capstone unit that will allow you to bring theory and practice together and research a topic of your interest that is relevant to your field of study. To help you with this, you will be introduced to the processes and techniques of research methods while working with a research supervisor to develop your ideas.Careers: You will have the skills needed to take up opportunities in banking and finance or the public sector. Career paths include research and analysis financial risk analysis and economics and research.This course is an appropriate foundation for further academic study at either MPhil or PhD level.
