Unravel the theory, history and societal impact of the world’s most powerful storytelling medium – all while developing your film-making knowledge. Taught by an impressive team that includes a mix of film makers, writers and researchers, you’ll soon see why we’re ranked among the very best in the UK for film studies.
Discover how powerful images and strong messages can change the world. Learn cutting-edge theoretical approaches to cinema across the world, while exploring the intersection between theory, culture and image. Investigate cognitive film theory that focuses on the experience and reactions of the audience.
Global cinema is one of our many specialisms and you’ll have the chance to work with experts in British and Hong Kong cinema, Asian film-making, African-American popular culture, Middle Eastern cinemas, European arthouse cinemas and Hollywood Cinema.
Throughout the course you’ll have the opportunity to hone your skills in film production and put theory into practice. If film-making is your passion, you can spend up to 50% of your time on the practical side of the business.
Experiment with our top-of-the-range film production equipment, from Black Magic 4K cameras to green screens, then bring it all together with our specialist software and editing suites. You can borrow the equipment to use for your own personal projects too.
The Lancaster area provides a fantastic backdrop for film-making. Previous students have filmed on our leafy campus as well as the historic city of Lancaster. Other nearby locations include the coastline of Morecambe Bay, the ancient woodlands of Bowland Forest, and the impressive mountains and lakes of the Lake District.
Make the most of the local arts scene on our doorstep with an arts venue that showcases the latest independent and foreign films. In previous years our Master’s students have shown their films there. There are also mainstream cinemas in Lancaster and nearby Morecambe, as well as a student run cinema and film production society on campus. And you’ll have access to the the BFI player to stay up to date with the latest national and regional releases.
Students need to have 2:1 Hons degree (UK or equivalent) in Film or in a relevant discipline.
