Study Film and English at Southampton to explore storytelling across both art forms, analyzing writing from early poetry to contemporary works while developing critical perspectives on cinema. You'll examine literature and films through diverse contexts including performance, music, science and philosophy, with the opportunity to spend your third year abroad in countries with distinctive film cultures like South Korea, Sweden, Ireland or the Czech Republic. The program covers film classics and contemporary works across genres including film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary and animation, while English modules examine global literature in various social and cultural contexts, including specialized study of adaptations from Jane Austen to Harry Potter. You can explore British/European/world cinema, take scriptwriting courses, participate in writing workshops at Nuffield Southampton Theatres, experiment with avant-garde writing at Entropics (John Hansard Gallery), access rare books at Chawton House Library, and submit films to our annual festival. We regularly review courses for quality improvement (regulated by England's Office for Students), maintaining educational standards while allowing necessary updates.
