Our Film and English degree at Southampton explores storytelling across both art forms, analyzing writing from early poetry to contemporary novels while developing critical perspectives on Hollywood blockbusters, European and world cinema. You'll examine literature and films through diverse contexts including performance, music, science and philosophy, studying film classics alongside contemporary cinema across genres like film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary and animation. The English curriculum spans global written English in various social and cultural contexts, encouraging exploration of different eras and creative writing, including specialized study of novel adaptations from Jane Austen to Harry Potter. Course opportunities include exploring international cinema scriptwriting and narrative non-fiction modules writing workshops at Nuffield Southampton Theatres experimental writing at Entropics accessing rare books at Chawton House Library submitting to our annual film festival and attending a 4-week summer school at Dongguk University in Seoul with film and cultural courses. We regularly review courses for quality improvement (regulated by England's Office for Students), ensuring educational standards while allowing necessary revisions.
