How do the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere interact? This course will develop your skills in data manipulation and interpretation in order to understand and model natural systems and help solve the world’s pressing environmental issues. You will gain the ability to find patterns and trends in datasets to uncover new insights. As a trained data scientist, many careers are open to you.
Course description
Please note, this course is being advertised subject to approval.
Whether working in the earth sciences, ecology, hydrology, oceanography, meteorology, climate science or environmental chemistry, Environmental Scientists increasingly need strong data manipulation, analysis, modelling and visualisation skills.
The interdisciplinary MSc in Environmental Data Science equips students with these skills, which enable improved understanding of environmental processes and inform societal action and sustainable decision-making. The uptake, use, and commercialisation of environmental data has created a demand for expertise in Data Science and you will be trained in a broad range of fundamental data science techniques. These skills could lead to careers focus on applications of environmental data analyses as well as a wide range of other data science opportunities. They address the shortage of qualified data scientists in the UK and abroad and will place you in a strong position for a data science career.
Careers and employability
The programmes will furnish you with the technical and ‘soft’ transferable skills that will allow you to pursue your career aspirations. In addition to becoming a technically proficient Environmental Data Scientist, you will be better-able to: learn new things and to adapt to new situations; assess situations, ideas, and arrive at decisions; develop innovative ideas and solutions to problems; deal with people and express yourself clearly and effectively; understand what others are saying and discuss options and courses of action.
There is a shortage of qualified data scientists in the UK and abroad. As a successful graduate, you will be highly employable as an Environmental Data Scientist/Analyst/Consultant in a range of businesses, consultancies, governments and research institutions that use environmental data to better understand and manage the natural world, human societies and their inter-relationships and interactions. You will also gain PGDip award in this course.
Students are required to have a second-class honours degree in any subject. Students with nonstandard qualifications are encouraged to apply. We also give due consideration to prior professional experience gained by mature students in relevant areas of work.
