The foundation year offers an innovative pathway into your degree. It is the first part of a four-year degree programme. It provides an alternative route for those unable to meet the traditional entry requirements for a three-year degree. It will prepare you for your degree studies in a supportive and stimulating learning environment. You will begin with an exploration of education and society, before moving onto consider including identity, being human and the digital world. Over the course of the year, you will build the skills and experience to prepare you for your chosen degree. Our English degree invites you to think about how literature and language shapes the world around you, your place within it, and how it can engage you with the issues that matter in the modern world. You will have the opportunity to study a range of texts from different cultures, perspectives, and periods, with particular emphasis on modern and contemporary writing. As well as this, you may explore texts like blogs, social media posts, film and TV to help you think about the big issues of the day. Currently, these might include the discussions happening around immigration and race, gender identity, and climate change. Throughout the course, tutors place a strong emphasis on developing high-level communication skills which range from critical thinking to negotiation with others and include progression in your own learning. These are skills that employers value and there are opportunities within the degree to explore your own career aspirations. The goal of our English degree is to equip you with the necessary qualities and training to succeed in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. Graduates will possess the confidence to speak thoughtfully about current issues, the initiative to adapt to change, and the confidence to take up new opportunities
