Overview

By choosing to embark on postgraduate research study in English Literature at Glasgow, you will be joining a thriving, dynamic, and internationally-renowned research community. Glasgow was ranked third in the UK, and first in Scotland, for research strength in English Language and Literature in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014)

Our staff interests and expertise cover the entire chronological range of study in English Literature, from the Medieval period to the present day, as well as critical theory and creative writing.

Our research

Our research is interdisciplinary and crosses periods and themes, in fields such as:

  • spatial humanities
  • colonial and postcolonial studies
  • American studies
  • Irish studies
  • medical humanities
  • translation, textual scholarship and editing
  • digital humanities
  • avant-garde poetries and poetics

Our students

Beyond their individual projects, our students are fully engaged in the rich intellectual life of our subject area and the School of Critical Studies, organizing reading groups and conferences, participating in colloquia, and, from the second year of study, contributing to undergraduate teaching. A competitive research and travel grant scheme available through the College of Arts will allow you to access archives outside Glasgow and take your work to the world, presenting papers at national and international conferences. We also offer a rich and needs-based research training programme and support you in your own research, networking and training initiatives.

Thesis length: 70,000-100,000 words, including references, bibliography and appendices (other than documentary appendices).

A Doctor of Philosophy may be awarded to a student whose thesis is an original work making a significant contribution to knowledge in, or understanding of, a field of study and normally containing material worthy of publication.

The uni seems to spend a lot of money on buildings and fancy tech and not enough on its staff and actually improving its courses, I'd rather know my professors are comfortably..Read more
