By choosing to embark on postgraduate research study in English Literature at Glasgow, you will be joining a thriving, dynamic, and internationally-renowned research community. Glasgow was ranked third in the UK, and first in Scotland, for research strength in English Language and Literature in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014)
Our staff interests and expertise cover the entire chronological range of study in English Literature, from the Medieval period to the present day, as well as critical theory and creative writing.

Our students
Beyond their individual projects, our students are fully engaged in the rich intellectual life of our subject area and the School of Critical Studies, organizing reading groups and conferences, participating in colloquia, and, from the second year of study, contributing to undergraduate teaching. A competitive research and travel grant scheme available through the College of Arts will allow you to access archives outside Glasgow and take your work to the world, presenting papers at national and international conferences. We also offer a rich and needs-based research training programme and support you in your own research, networking and training initiatives.
Thesis length: 40,000-70,000 words (including references, bibliography and appendices).
Our Degree of Master of Letters (Research) requires you to undertake a postgraduate course of special study and research that represents a distinct contribution to knowledge.
Our regular standard of admission is at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1), although candidates will usually also have completed or be undertaking a Masters qualification.
