English Literature - BA (Hons)

Northumbria University, Newcastle

The staff are incredible, unbelievably understanding and supportive. They want you to succeed and you can really tell. However, Lipman building is constantly broken. The top two floors have been out of service for year and now the entire building is out of commission and not expected to be back until the summer. Surely at this point just demolish the place.

The worst aspects of my university experience have been the strikes and total lack of communication about that. The best has been the memories that I have made with my friends and continue to make today.

Northumbria’s Newcastle campus is such a great place to study as the city is absolutely beautiful, and there are plenty of places to see and visit. The campus has everything you need right at your fingertips aswell and this is really helpful for busy days

campus is really close to town which is great, the library is large and i don’t know if i’ve ever gone in and not been able to find a free space/computer to use. the union is good in general, prices are good etc, but feels like there’s a lot of underused space in there. for example there’s red’s bar on the top floor that barely anyone knows about and i’m not sure it’s ever even properly open, but it’s a huge space and if people knew it was there maybe it could be used more?

The positive thing about it is the staff are all really supportive and engaged with ensuring we are all supported in every aspect. The negative is the mental health team are so incredibly patronising and unhelpful and despite me saying countless times I need long term support and not just a session every two weeks for a 6 session period I had two sessions and was dismissed as I had a good week.

Northumbria is a brilliant place to study. There is always something going on in regards to student life, whether it be quiz nights at habita or planning trips places for people to go to. In regards to the facilities, there is so much, from sporting facilities, to academic facilities like the library, there is also other places to study if someone doesn't want to use the library. One of my favourite things is probably the multiple options of cafes/places to eat because they can also be used to study and the prices are amazing for students. The university provides support for a lot of things outside of academic study, such as mental health support, financial support and general well being support, not forgetting all of the things in place to help regarding careers. When it comes to actual study, the support we get from tutors is amazing. They will always provide help whenever it's needed, whether it be a personal matter or something regarding the work. The university definitely has some of the most amazing professors, I know my course in particular has some amazing and supportive members of staff. I'm not really a student that gets involved in a lot of things, but I know that if I ever wanted to, I would be made comfortable to do so. Overall, the university is great.
