Our Joint Honours course in English Literature and American Studies allows you to combine the study of literary texts across a broad geographical and chronological range with a specific focus on the literature, culture, history, and politics of North America. Through inspired teaching and intellectual debate, we will nurture your passion by developing your creative and critical thinking. You will learn how to communicate effectively and solve complex problems as you develop an awareness of how past cultures, societies and texts shape our present and future.A degree in English Literature and American Studies will provide you with a repertoire of competencies and skills that will put you in a strong position to enter a variety of professions. You will be encouraged to plan and think about future employment and/or study from the outset of your degree. In the second year, students have the option to study abroad, which demonstrates a range of attributes – most notably self-confidence, autonomy, and cultural awareness – to prospective employers. You will also have the chance to undertake a placement year, which will provide you with an invaluable learning experience through hands-on work in a real working environment. At Northumbria, we regularly collaborate with external partners, including New Writing North, embassies and local authorities. Throughout your studies, you will be able to work alongside our partners and gain invaluable work experience and opportunities.
