Aiming to inspire a passionate and expert knowledge of literary and cultural texts from the medieval era to the present day, you will study a variety of writers from the West Midlands to the wider world beyond. As part of our BA (Hons) English Language and Literatures course, you will also gain an understanding of how the English language is used in different contexts and of its political and ideological significance. You will analyse literature and culture in a wide range of social and historical contexts, especially in relation to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, class and disability.

One other important goal is for you to develop your awareness of the significance of ethical evaluations of reading, writing, and linguistic interpretation, supporting an understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion in literature, language, and culture. Reflections on literary and linguistic production and reception, value, and cultural capital will be encouraged.

The content of the course was created to help you familiarise yourself with types and genres, forms, aesthetics, and functions associated with literary and cultural media bodies of diverse genres and improve your communication skills in order to develop and sustain a career. Combining Language and Literatures will enhance your abilities in critical and creative thinking, analysis, research, and problem-solving, for academic success and employment beyond your degree. Our ultimate goal is to help you develop confidence in making your voice heard at university, at work, and in culture and society.

Graduates of English Language and Literature programmes are known for their abilities in critical thinking, gathering of evidence, argument and opinion construction, and problem-solving, which provide them unique advantages when seeking employment.

What happens on the course?

Our BA (Hons) English Language and Literatures course provides an occasion to explore numerous literary works, all the way from the canonical to the popular and exciting from lots of different authors.

You will learn the ways in which English is used not only to shape society, but also our own perceptions. There will also be a focus on the politics, ethics, and ideologies of cultural representation, and issues of equality and diversity in literatures, language culture. You will be treated with warmth and respect by a friendly, professional staff, as they seek to help you reach your potential. As you take part in seminars presented by famous literary critics, award-winning authors, and poets.
