This course gives you the opportunity to study English in combination with Teaching English to Speakers or Other Languages. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Proficiency in modern languages could help you to gain a competitive edge in the global jobs market. In both the private and public sectors there is demand for professionals with strong language skills who can work in culturally diverse environments. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a practical branch of applied linguistics and our focus is on helping you put the skills you learn to practical use in the world of work. Our TESOL experts will help you understand language learning and teaching approaches, as well as the English language itself. You will develop a new understanding of different types of communication and other cultures. As part of your degree you will have the opportunity to take the internationally recognised Trinity Cert TESOL teaching qualification, one of only two globally recognised TESOL qualifications. Combining this qualification with the skills youll develop throughout your degree will prepare you for the world of work, equipping you to follow in the footsteps of our graduates, many of whom work around the world. After your second year you can choose to progress to your final year or take an optional year out going on placement or studying abroad. Both are great options to get more experience. Career prospects
A TESOL and English focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs, media work, teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways. Languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the UK and abroad. Recent English graduates have become school and college teachers, and some have gained employment in fields as diverse as banking, finance, manufacturing and retail.
Employability in TESOL offers a broad range of career paths. Graduates can opt to focus on teaching, working in a range of educational contexts teaching English to a diverse mix of learners of different ages and cultures. Opportunities are also prevalent in areas such as materials development, syllabus design, online learning, language testing, exam invigilation, and educational management.
There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training. There are a number of postgraduate degrees graduates of this programme could progress to including MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms, one in English language and one in TESOL, MA English Studies, with specialisms in gothic studies and postcolonial studies, MA Publishing or MA/MFA Creative Writing.
