Course StructureOn this two year HND course at HSDC South Downs, you will study the following units:
Year One (HNC):· Engineering Design· Engineering Science· Engineering Mathematics· Managing a Professional Engineering ProjectPlus, a combination of four more units from:· Automation, Robotics and PLC· Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines· Electrical Machines· Quality and Process Improvement· Production Engineering for Manufacture· Electrical & Electronic Principles· Mechanical Principles
Year Two (HND):· Research Project· Professional Engineering Management· Lean Manufacturing· Further MathematicsPlus, a combination of three more units from:· Virtual Engineering· Advanced Manufacturing Technology· Industrial Systems· Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage· Advanced Mechanical PrinciplesThis level of study requires additional hours allocated each week outside of college for research and writing reports. You will be required to attend college for three days a week.On successful completion of Year One HNC, students can progress on to Year Two HND Engineering.
Teaching and LearningClasses are informal and incorporate a variety of teaching and learning methods e.g. discussion, lectures, group work and practical sessions.The course will be delivered over two years as a full time course, over three days a week.
AssessmentAssessment is made through completion of assignment-based activities, reports, coursework, practical work, independent study and research. Each unit is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade and these will be used to calculate a final overall grade for the qualification.
Industry LinksThe course has been designed with local employer needs in mind and can be used as part of a Levy-Funded Higher Apprenticeship.
ProgressionFollowing the completion of this course, you can progress to a top-up degree at university or Degree Apprenticeship. Career destinations include Design Engineers, Electrical or Electronic Engineers and Mechanical Engineers.
Entry CriteriaIf you have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:– Grade 9 – 4 in GCSE Mathematics – a sound mathematical ability is essential– A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering– A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in relevant subjects such as Mathematics, Physics etc.
