Make a significant contribution to your clinical specialty with the published research you’ll produce on a programme designed specifically for medical graduates in clinical practice. On this challenging programme, you’ll develop a research proposal, along the lines of an empirical scientific project that’s relevant to your clinical specialty. This can be related to any branch of medicine including general practice, acute hospital medicine, community health, public health and mental health. If you can identify a clinical problem for which there is a gap in the evidence base, and have in mind a research project that could help address this problem, this will form the basis of your doctorate. You can also be involved in a wider, collaborative project, provided that you can demonstrate and identify an independent contribution that meets our criteria. You will be supported in developing your idea into a research project. The research can be quantitative or qualitative and may involve primary data collection, or secondary analysis of an existing database. Supervision and support are provided by a carefully selected team that will include at least one clinician in your specialty and others as required. You’ll be provided with comprehensive research training to help you get the most from your programme where you’ll have the opportunity to meet and network with other MD or PhD students
Students must hold an undergraduate medical qualification and must be eligible to register with the General Medical Council (GMC). If they want to undertake hands-on clinical research they must be registered with the GMC. Applicants are normally clinicians undertaking research associated with their employment.
