The FdA Design and Materials course enables you to begin to find your individual identity as a designer and maker and to help you locate yourself in the wider world of the creative industries in relevant ways. It is aimed at students who wish to develop areas including studio ceramics, jewellery, textiles, print and enamelling. The course is interdisciplinary in nature (enabling and encouraging you to work in more than one material or process area) and you will explore a wide range of media and processes to arrive at your own direction, working more independently over the two years. A lively and experimental approach is encouraged; practical workshops will allow you to explore and develop skills using a wide range of 2D and 3D materials, and digital media. It is regarded as critical to your development that you are free to move between areas and can seek out and devise your own means to combine materials and processes, as appropriate to your aims. You will focus at level 4 on how to communicate visually, to explore strategies for creative thinking, creative experimentation and methods of communication in your creative practice. You will have the opportunity to work with a broad range of practical processes, both physical and digital, that can support and enhance the communication of your creative ideas. You will also be actively taking part in creative conversations and debates in the studio, in workplaces (visits and placements) and through our lecture and seminar programme. You will find out about historical and contemporary theoretical and social contexts for design, materials and making as well as professional organisations and business contexts. Your developing professional and transferrable skills will include critical strategies that will inform your own personal approach to creative thinking and the making of your practical work. You will participate in exhibitions and enterprises to build a professional network and to market your work.
