By combining Welsh and Philosophy, you will gain a wealth of transferable knowledge and skills, opening doors to a variety of career paths. The joint honors degree gives you the opportunity to specialize in two subjects and you will find that they often share issues and perspectives.

The Welsh course is relevant to contemporary Wales and is taught by a School that is recognized for the quality and impact of its research. The course aims to produce graduates with a thorough understanding (both academic and practical) of the Welsh language, its literature and culture, a high level of oral and written language skills, and well-developed employability and creative skills. relevant to modern Wales.

There are two interrelated aspects of the philosophy course at Cardiff that make it notable among Russell Group universities. One is that there is a strong emphasis on ethics, politics and aesthetics among the modules offered. The other is that our research and teaching is spread evenly across the 'analytical' and 'Continental' styles of Western Philosophy.

As a joint honors student, you will find that there are often areas and perspectives that link topics, be it critical analysis, historical contexts or recent research.

Learning and assessment

We offer a supportive learning environment, where you are enabled to gain a range of skills and a wealth of specialist knowledge. Our courses develop intellectual skills, such as critical thinking, in-depth analysis, evaluating evidence, making arguments, applying theory, and using language effectively in writing and discussion. You will gain experience in areas such as team working, independent research and time management.

You will be taught in lectures and seminars. Lectures provide an overview of key subject concepts and frameworks, preparing you for undertaking independent research for the seminars and developing your own ideas. Seminars give you the opportunity to research the ideas outlined in the lectures.

Careers and work placements

Career prospects

In 2013/14, 100% of School of Welsh graduates available for work reported being in employment and / or further study within six months of graduating.

Due to the demand for Welsh speakers, a degree in Welsh provides an invaluable qualification for posts requiring bilingual personnel. Many of our graduates are now pursuing careers in law, politics, media, performing arts, administration and education, or studying at postgraduate level.

In 2013/14, 91% of School of English, Communication and Philosophy graduates available for work reported being in employment and / or further study within six months of graduating.

We provide our students with a highly satisfying academic experience that aids their development as critical thinking and culturally aware citizens. Their high analytical skills, powers of expression and progressive self-reliance make them particularly attractive to employers.
