The Criminal Justice LLM allows you to gain in-depth comparative knowledge of global criminal justice and domestic systems around the world, including their regional and transnational interactions. Understand different systems of criminal justice (for example civil vs common law, or international criminal law) and investigate the challenges that police, prosecutors, judges, victims and policymakers face in a global environment.

Study within the Criminal Justice Centre (CJC), which provides a forum for research and learning in all aspects of criminal justice

The LLM can lead to further postgraduate research and study in criminal law. We also offer an MRes programme in Criminal Law

The Criminal Justice Centre provides advice and training to the legal profession, governments and judiciaries, and you can attend many seminars, lectures, workshops and conferences

Your fellow students will come from the UK and more than 80 other countries, each able to draw on prior academic and professional experience from different jurisdictions

What you'll study

You will consider multiple aspects of criminal law and justice, including issues of terrorism and human rights, migration, international crime, cybercrime, corporate violence and economic crime, and mental health law. Your studies will encompass the laws in different jurisdictions and how they are applied internationally.

Assessment

You will be assessed by a range of methods combining examinations and coursework which will be fully explained in your student pack available during induction.

For your dissertation, you will undertake more self-directed research and writing work with the support of an allocated supervisor.

Career paths

There is a very high rate of employment of our students within six months of graduation. We have specialist career advisers who organise events and assist with finding internship opportunities at UK and international law firms and other employers.

Entry requirements

Degree requirements – You need a 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Law or a degree with substantial law content. Law graduates with a 2:2 honours degree who also have other legal qualifications and/or substantial professional legal experience may also qualify. Other routes - Non-law graduates with a minimum second class honours degree, that have also obtained a Merit (or 60 per cent) in the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) recognised by the UK professional bodies, may also qualify. Non-law graduates may also be considered on the basis of exceptional professional experience (of at least five years) in a legal area or an area directly related to their programme of study.
