Whether you’re just beginning your writing journey or looking to take your craft to the next level, we’ll help you grow into a confident, professional writer. In a city celebrated for its literary heritage and thriving contemporary scene, you’ll join a creative community that inspires both emerging and established writers.
On our Creative Writing MA you’ll work closely with acclaimed authors and experienced academics to refine your voice, broaden your technical skills and explore a range of genres - from prose fiction and nonfiction, to poetry and scriptwriting for stage and screen. You’ll engage with current and past writers, including through Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre, and gain insights into the publishing world with industry-facing vocational modules and opportunities to meet agents and publishers.
If your goal is to pursue a new career in writing, media, or publishing, enhance your professional skills or simply write for pleasure, this course will help you unlock your full creative potential and develop your writing to a professional, publishable standard.
Applicants should normally hold a good honours degree (2.2 or above), or equivalent, in an appropriate discipline and must be able to demonstrate ability in creative writing. A portfolio of recent creative work must be submitted consisting of 2000 words prose, or 5 poems, or a proportionate mixture of the two. Applicants may also be interviewed. If it is some time since you completed your undergraduate education and you do not meet the standard requirement, it may be possible to consider your application based on evidence of other relevant personal and professional experience, the support of your referees and your portfolio of written work.
